The problem that I listed on the message board regarding transmission problems with my JD 4300 Hydro actually appear to be power related. It appears that the tractor simply does not have enough horsepower to pull a full transport speed in high range (range C). The informaton im getting from my dealer suggests that the Hydro transmission is taking more power than was expected.I would like to hear from owners of 4400-4600 hydros (higher horsepower tractors) to see if similar problems exist.

I'm thinking about buying a 4300, does this suggest one shouldn't trust the stated HP ratings or did the JD engineers just screw up when they designed the Hydrostat tranny? ....

Derek, I am not sure its a matter of not trusting the horsepower ratings in this case. One of the comments I received on the message board was from a 4300 owner with the synchreverser transmission, instead of the hydro, who claimed he had full travel speed at the fully rated rpm. Even according to Deere's specs the hydro transmission loses about one and a half horsepower over the synchreverser. These tractors went into production last fall and it irritates me that the factory reps weren't aware of a problem until now. Deere isn't the only manufacturer that gets caught putting a product into production without proper testing. I've always said that manufacturers should put the pre-production models into the hands of a few "future customers" for test purposes instead of relying exclusively on factory and design employees. We are the ones who give the equipment a realistic test of what it will be expected to do. In the case of the 4300 Hydro, I suspect factory officials either forgot to run the tractor down the road to test travel speed performance or thought it was not enough of a problem to be a concern. ....

I own a 4300 w/syncreverser and can confirm that it will pull uphill at max rpm in high range/high gear. I did get a recall letter on this tractor concerning thetrans; a thrust bearing, or clutch shims, or both. I suppose I should be gladthat at least Deere had the integrity to tell me about it, and fix it at theirexpense. I will schedule the fix after the busy season. Overall, I am happy with the unit. ....

Terry,I have a JD4400 HST - before seeing your post, I had never really used the high range much. This morning I decided to see if my tractor might have the same problem you describe. Bottom line - it EASILY pulls full rated rpm's (2,700 rpm) in all 3 ranges. In fact, it will pull 3,000 rpm (as high as the tach will go) in high range. The tractor had a JD430 loader and JD weight box (approx. 750 lbs). attached when I ran the test. Either your dealer doesn't know what he's talking about or doesn't want to be bothered helping you resolve the problem - time to escalate to your regional JD office!!! Maybe some of the other JD dealers that frequent this board can help point you to the "right" people within JD to get some action. ....

I spoke with the service manager at my dealership this morning. He claims that the factory rep told him late yesterday that my problem may be related to a misadjusted parking brake. The factory rep claims that the tractor is expected to run at its fully rated rpm in high range and that the tractors reported with a problem like mine were remedied with an adjustment of the parking brake.My service rep plans on picking up the tractor on Monday. I will post on the message board any progress. ....

I have a 4300 sync-reverser, my tractor has a loader and filled tires R4, I drive itto the gas station about a mile away alot and it will pull at 2900 rpm with NO problem.Also, I used it for hay rides last fall, with the loader left on and pulling a trailer, with7 adults it has NO problem in high. Thats alot of weight!! Better check with a differentdealer. Richard ....

Not all of the 4300 have the recall problem, only some of the early models were fittedwith a improper bearing in the clutch. If you have several hours on your tractor, say 20 ormore and have not had a problem, like not stopping in reverse while clutch in depressedthen yours has no problem. I have a 4300 with no problem so I will not need to return it. Thedealer will preform a test, of which the tractor will run for a hour or more and thenif the "non-stopping" problem is not noticed there will be no repair needed. Richard ....

Our 4300 has 49hrs on it and no problems at all, it pulls full rpms in C range, i drove it to a nearby gas station the other day and was impressed with the way it flew, i even got to use the cruise control button. overall no complaints, (except maybe a larger cup holder!) ....
